SHOPPERS must take steps to stay secure online, warns one e-tailer as 27 million customers log on for Christmas.

Deane Brooks, co-owner of www.perfume-click.co.uk a discount fragrance e-tailer, says Christmas shopping can be safe and stress-free if consumers stay alert:

“Online sales are set to reach £40billion this Christmas which shows more people than ever are turning from the high street to the net to guarantee a good price and great choice but shoppers must check they are buying from safe sites.

“Security and trustworthiness are two of the most significant concerns for e-shoppers. Stay calm – an online transaction is more secure than a card transaction in a shop or conducted by telephone, as the information transmitted online is highly encrypted. Also shoppers should do their research and look into independent review sites, like Trust Pilot, to examine the sites they’re buying from.” he added.

Deane Brooks’ top tips for shopping safely online are:

  • Only use sites with secure order forms. A normal website address begins http but when you are entering credit card details, the address should be preceded with https. The‘s’ stands for secure which means your details will be encrypted for safety. There should also be a closed padlock symbol in either the bottom right hand corner of the window or in the address bar of the internet browser
  • Stick with what you know when it comes to the web. Shop on sites you are familiar with or which have been recommended by a trusted source.
  • Make sure you include your address and email for the retailer and take note of the charges which will be applied additionally e.g. postage and packaging.
  • Check out the return and delivery policies and get a printout of your order confirmation. You need to know where you stand if there are any problems and you may need to prove you made the purchase

Brooks says internet shopping can make Christmas merrier for all, adding: “Online shopping is a great resource and, provided you stay web savvy, will take the time and trauma out of high street shopping this season.”
